Food
Imagine this: Some XYZ craving a delicious pizza, but had to cancel the order unexpectedly. Disappointing, right? Now, picture this: that same hot and fresh pizza is offered to you nearby at a bargain price. That's the idea behind Zomato's new "Food Rescue" initiative.
The Problem of Food Waste
In a country like India, where millions go hungry, it's shocking to think about the amount of food that's wasted every day. According to Zomato, they alone see a staggering 4 lakh order cancellations every month despite their no refund on cancellation policy! This food wastage is not limited to just one application. Even Swiggy received 3.8 lakh cancellations every month and, that amounted to around 7 lakh kilograms of food wastage, which was enough to feed 3,000 people for a year, according to a Change Started report.
This translates to a massive amount of food that's simply thrown away. Not only this but Every year, millions of tonnes of food, enough to feed millions, end up in landfills. This not only represents a significant economic loss but also has severe environmental consequences.
Zomato's Innovative Solution
To address this pressing issue, Zomato, one of India's leading food delivery platforms, has introduced a groundbreaking initiative called "Food Rescue." This innovative program aims to reduce food waste by redistributing canceled orders to hungry customers at discounted prices. "Today, we are introducing a new feature (being scaled as we speak) – Food Rescue!", wrote Zomato CEO, Deepinder Goyal on X.
How Does 'Food Rescue' Work?
Order Cancellation: When a customer cancels an order, the food, still fresh and ready to eat, is at risk of being discarded.
Notification to Nearby Users: Zomato's app alerts users through push notifications within a -kilometer radius about the available food.
Claiming the Food: Interested users can quickly claim the food at a significantly reduced price.
Delivery: The delivery partner, who has already traveled to the restaurant or picked up the food, delivers the same to the new customer.
** To ensure freshness, the option to claim will only be available for a few minutes. Orders containing items sensitive to distance or temperature, such as ice creams, shakes, smoothies, and certain perishable items, will not be eligible for Food Rescue.
